Audiobook – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Genre: FictionPublication Date: 1813
Read by: Kate Reading
I first tried to read this about four years ago and ended up putting it aside because I just couldn’t make myself care about the characters. I kept thinking that I must have missed something because I know so many people who just adore Jane Austen’s books. I decided to try listening to it instead. I did finish it and I loved listening to Kate Reading’s voice and the way she read the book.
I must just not have the “Jane Austen Loving” gene, though. I don’t have a shopping gene either, so maybe they’re near each other on the DNA map. It’s not that I have anything against classics in general, because I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed several in the past few years. I didn’t dislike the book, but I really just didn’t care that much. It wasn’t anything against Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. They were fine, if not a little bland. It was nothing like the intense dislike I felt for both Heathcliff and Cathy in Wuthering Heights. Mostly what I felt about this one was apathy. Maybe I’m too old and cynical to get caught up in it. I probably should have read it when I was in my teens or twenties. Then again, it might just be that genetic flaw thing.

No stars – I couldn’t even finish it
1 star – I didn’t like it but I managed to finish it.
2 stars – It was OK. Not good, but seriously just OK.
3 stars - I liked it. I didn’t think it was great, but I thought it was good entertainment.
4 stars – I really liked it. I really think you might like it too.
5 stars – It was amazing. I’d recommend this to just about anyone.

Q, I don't have that gene either! Just never could get into her, even in my teens or twenties!
Plenty of other books out there for me!
I read some of Jane Austen's books after watching the BBC production of P&P, which is one of my all time favorite tv-series (and I am not much of a romantic in general). I liked them, enough to at some point read more or reread them. But I am definitely not swooning over Jane Austen like some others are.
I don't have a shopping gene either, so maybe there is a link between the two genes! ;-)
Ahh, you made some changes . . . pretty spiffy! :)
As for Jane Austen, I'm thinking I'm not much of a fan either, but I really haven't given her a shot. My attempt will be via TiVo, not even an audiobook. *grin*
BTW ~ I love that quote by Steve Martin, too. Makes me giggle every time.
Joining the club! I've read a few Austens and each one leaves me unimpressed. I don't have the shopping gene either, so maybe they are related ;-0
I'm missing the Jane Austen AND shopping genes, too! Maybe we should start a club? ;)
Add me to the club. I'm not an Austen fan and I hate shopping.
Karen: I'm so glad to hear this. I was beginning to think I was a freak.
Myrthe: I haven't seen any of the movies or miniseries. Not sure I want to.
Joy: thanks - it was time for some blog tweaking - I get bored.
Nicola: Hmmm - I'm beginning to think we might be on to something with the Jane Austen - Shopping connection ;-)
Les: Oh a club - and we can hold meetings at The Chowder Bowl!
Pussreboots: well it appears that the incredibly unscientific theory may be right ;-)
I have the “Jane Austen Loving” gene AND the shopping gene!~! So, maybe Q~ is on to something. I saw the mini-series first then read the book.
Scoot: Hee hee hee - I'm beginning to think I might be onto something here.
i couldn't get through Emma, so i've steered clear of Pride and Prejudice until recently picking it up at the library. i'm going to see what happens ...
my 17yo daughter, who (like me) does not have the shopping gene loves Pride and Prejudice! :)
I followed you here from Semicolon. I am an Austen lover, but it's been an acquired taste--for me it's like Shakespeare--it has required practice to learn and appreciate the language. I watched the A & E Pride and Prejudice first, then read the book. I think this helped. I've since gone on to see most of the adaptations, and read all six novels. I like them a lot, but it's been a learning journey.
Alison: so far, your daughter appears to be going against the trend :-)
Girl Detective: thanks for stopping by. I know lots of folks just love this, but I'm afraid it's just not my cup of tea.
I like the movies better than the book. And I also have a love-hate relationship with shopping.
Framed: I MIGHT watch the movie someday.
Jane Austen is the reare case where I like the movie adaptations better than the actual books! I seen all of the movies that have come out and am really enjoying the BBC produtions that have been showing on PBS's Masterpiece Theater.
Teddy Rose: good to know ;-) Maybe I'll stick with the movies.
