Genre: Juvenile Fiction
Publication Date: 1964
Pages: 155
Challenges: Heart of a Child Challenge #2, Eponymous Challenge #3

I still love this book. The book is different and definitely better than either of the movie versions.

Some details I’d forgotten – the other 4 Golden ticket finders take both their parents on the factory tour.
Everlasting Gobstoppers change color once a week.

Some of my favorite lines still make me smile:

Violet, you’re turning violet, Violet!

This elevator can go sideways and longways and slantways and any other way you can think of!
And this part of the Oompa Loompa’s Song after Mike Teavee meets his fate:

‘All right!’ you’ll cry. ‘All right!’ you’ll say,
‘But if we take the set away,
What shall we do to entertain
Our darling children? Please explain!’
We’ll answer this by asking you,
‘What used the darling ones to do?
‘How used they keep themselves contented
Before this monster was invented?’
Have you forgotten? Don’t you know?
We’ll say it very loud and slow:
THEY … USED … TO … READ! They’d READ and READ,
AND READ and READ, and then proceed
To READ some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks!
One half their lives was reading books!
The nursery shelves held books galore!
Books cluttered up the nursery floor!
And in the bedroom, by the bed,
More books were waiting to be read!
Such wondrous, fine, fantastic tales
Of dragons, gypsies, queens, and whales
And treasure isles, and distant shores
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oars,
And pirates wearing purple pants,
And sailing ships and elephants,
And cannibals crouching ’round the pot,
Stirring away at something hot.
(It smells so good, what can it be?
Good gracious, it’s Penelope.)
The younger ones had Beatrix Potter
With Mr. Tod, the dirty rotter,
And Squirrel Nutkin, Pigling Bland,
And Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and-
Just How The Camel Got His Hump,
And How the Monkey Lost His Rump,
And Mr. Toad, and bless my soul,
There’s Mr. Rat and Mr. Mole-
Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.

Roald Dahl was a genius! And he inspired my son to read through all his books for children. Until then, he didn't enjoy reading. I'll always be thankful to RD.

I read this as a kid and loved it. I had totally forgotten about that poem you shared. Gadzooks! Read books! That's great!

I'm feeling totally ashamed of myself. I've never read a book by Dahl. I didn't read as a kid and only started really reading about 25 years ago. So much catching up to do.

Mary: this is the only one of his books I ever read. I should read others.

Jeane: I'm really glad I read it again.

Booklogged: Oh read it - you'll enjoy it.

I love that Oompa Loompa song! They should have kept that one in the movie. Have you read James and the Giant Peach? I'm pretty sure it's by Dahl. I always liked that one as a child.

Andrea: I love that Oompa Loompa song - didn't remember it from before, but just loved it! I haven't read any other of Dahl's books, but I think I need to.

You know, I've never read this book! Hmmm....

Love that poem. This book sounds much better than the movie. But will I picture Johnny Deppe when I read it? Is that a bad thing?

Carrie: you definitely should read it.

Framed: actually neither Johnny Depp's version, nor Gene Wilder's is right, but the Gene Wilder version is much closer to the book.
