Heart of a Child Challenge #4

Another enjoyable read down memory lane thanks to Becky and the Heart of a Child Challenge. I had to add a couple of extras for this challenge since I was having such fun.

Mary Norton’s The Borrowers was a fond memory for me. It was still delightful so many years later. Arrietty, and her parents Pod and Homily and their little home beneath the floorboards made me smile. I never read any of the sequels, partly because the ending of this one was delightfully open-ended, leaving the reader to decide what the outcome was or will be.

I loved this:

Mrs. May looked back at her. “Kate,” she said after a moment, “stories never really end. They can go on and on and on. It’s just that sometimes, at a certain point, one stops telling them.”
I think that’s one of the reasons I love reading – even when the book ends, the story in my head doesn’t have to.

I read all the Borrowers books I could find when I was a kid! What fond memories.

Suzi: The Borrowers books were my favorites in childhood (I borrowed them so often from the library that I was finally asked to NOT borrow them for a couple of weeks so that 'other children could read them'). I recently read The Borrowers and review it here.

That's a very good reason for reading, Suzi. Thanks for bringing back a fond memory. I loved the Borrowers books, as a child, and used to imagine that I had a little family living inside my walls. They never did come out to play.

Jeane: I never read any of the others. Guess I should.

Wendy: Loved your review!! Thanks for the link.

Bookfool: Well - maybe that's a good thing ;-)

Thanks, Suzi, and you're welcome!

I read this when I was young and remembering liking it so much that I just got my own copy. But I never read any of the sequels. Thanks for refreshing the memories.

I don't like reading aloud, but read these all to my children. There is a very bad movie out, but a lot of my students have seen it and will pick up the book because of it. I love the illustrations in the original!

Framed: I may have to read the sequels. I enjoyed re-reading this one so much.

Ms. Yingling: I've heard the movie wasn't good. This would be a fun one to read aloud to the kids. I made sure I got the edition at the library that had the illustrations I remembered. They're wonderful.

Oh, I love the Borrowers! I should re-read them. My parents and I still blame the Borrowers when things go missing, 20+ years later!

Tiny: yes, do re-read this one - it's still fun!
