Library Loot – June 24
>> Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Eva and Marg that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. I’ve managed to keep my library stack manageable lately. I need to stop letting books jump off the shelf and into my hands, though. The book I own are staring at me and wondering if I’ve forgotten them.
Need to renew:
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Since I’ll be watching the movie for MyFriendAmy’s Summer of Hitchcock, I figured I’d best read the book before August 10th.
New this week:
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. I’m about halfway through this one right now and enjoying it. Freaky stuff, but good.

In the Sanctuary of Outcasts by Neil White. Thanks to a bunch of folks who talked this one up early, I was first on the library waiting list.
Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. I’ve never read anything by her, but wanted to start with her historical fiction stuff. This one looks to be written on the young end of YA, so it should be a quick read. Other stuff:
Rear Window is the next Hitchcock movie we’re watching and discussing for MyFriendAmy’s Summer of Hitchcock. I’ve seen this one, but I don’t think The Hubster has seen it before.

No stars – I couldn’t even finish it
1 star – I didn’t like it but I managed to finish it.
2 stars – It was OK. Not good, but seriously just OK.
3 stars - I liked it. I didn’t think it was great, but I thought it was good entertainment.
4 stars – I really liked it. I really think you might like it too.
5 stars – It was amazing. I’d recommend this to just about anyone.

Good choices!!!
Rebecca is one of my all-time favorite books. The movie . . . not too thrilled with it. Be sure to read the book first, if you can. The ending of the book made my heart go pitty-pat, but I think if I'd watched the movie first, it would have ruined the ending.
Fever 1793 is really an interesting little historical fiction -- and a nice quick read. I reviewed it a while back, but I have no idea when. I had no idea they'd had yellow fever epidemics so far north till I read that book. We have some very old graveyards with tons of yellow fever victims in our area, but I'd deluded myself into thinking the mosquito troubles were a Southern thing.
Did you say Rear Window is the next movie? That's one of my favorite Hitchcocks. First place goes to North by Northwest.
Bookfool: I'm looking forward to all of them. I definitely will read Rebecca before watching the movie. I'll have to look up your review of Fever 1793 after I do mine. Yes!! Rear Window is this week's Hitchcock movie. Join us on Amy's blog on Monday for the discussion!!
I loved the Gillian Flynn book, but enjoyed her first one, Sharp Objects, a bit more. In fact, I think it may be my favorite of the year. Have you read that one yet?
Yay for Hitchcock movies! Rear Window is my favorite too! There is a marathon on Saturday on TCM. Guess where I will be on Saturday?
Given that I enjoy YA, and historical fiction is my favourite genre, I really should give Laurel Halse Anderson a go! Enjoy your reads.
Summer of Hitchcock is a good motivator for Rebecca. Ia m looking forward to seeing that one since I don't remember it.
Cool! I have Dark Places sitting in my soon TBR pile. Glad to hear it's freaky, love that word!
Rear Window, Fabulous movie, one of my favourite Hitchcock's. I've seen it probably a dozen times. His Jimmy Stewart movies are fabulous. Try "Rope" sometime. It's a great one, too!
Hi!
All your books sound very intriguing! Have a great day!

Kristie: I'm liking Dark Places so far. Yes, I've read Sharp Objects. She can really write some seriously disturbed and messed up characters, can't she? So far I'm managing to get all the Hitchcock movies on DVD from my library which is working out really well. Love watching the extra feature stuff.
Marg: I love historical fiction too. I've never read any of hers, but am starting with this one and I'm also planning to read Chains (another of her HF/YA books).
Nicole: Exactly! I've been meaning to read Rebecca for ages and now I have to before watching the movie :-)
Nicola: If you've read Sharp Objects expect more disturbingly messed up people. If not, you've been warned. It's a great story so far, though. I"ve never seen Rope. I don't think that's on Amy's schedule for this summer, but I may add it to our list. Thanks for the recommendation!
Sherrie: thanks! now I'm off to check out yours :-)
Dark Places looks kind of interesting, must check it out on amazon
In the Santuary of Outcasts has sounded so good in all of those reviews!
I recently Jezebel, so Yellow Fever creeps me out.
Blodeuedd: Just finished Dark Places last night - she writes some disturbing characters!
Eva: OK now you have me curious. Jezebel?? and why does it make Yellow Fever creep you out??
