Confessions of a Serial Reader – The ones I’m caught up with
>> Thursday, April 28, 2011
So I’ve admitted that I’m hopelessly overcommitted to more series than I can read in a year, but I did set a goal to get caught up in or complete at least a few this year. Please note that I did not commit to not adding that many or more series to my list.
For my purposes, I consider “caught up with a series” to mean that I’ve either read all that are available or that the next one I have to read is the last book or most current release. Any series that I have two or more to read is one I do not consider caught up. This time around, I’m focusing on the series that I have a wait before the next one is published. Next month I’ll take a look at those series where I still need to read the most recently published in order to remain caught up.
One negative to getting caught up is that the next book is months away and not the next trip to the library or bookstore.
The Ones I’ve read all that are available:
I’m not including series that are complete (like Harry Potter) but these are series that are continuing and I’m waiting for the next to be published. Book covers and links are the last book in the series that I read.
Rachel Knight by Marcia Clark –
This one is almost cheating because only the first book has been published, but it counts, right? I loved Guilt by Association and am happy to know there’s another on the way.
Gideon Crew by Douglas Preston an Lincoln Child –
Again, the first in the series was only released a couple of months ago. Nevertheless, this is an interesting series and I’ll be watching for the next one. At least in this case I have many other books by this author team (their Pendergast series) that I haven’t read yet.
Kari Vaara by James Thompson –
This is one of the very best new series I’ve run across in the past few years. If you haven’t read them yet, you should. Set in Finland they are a wonderful opportunity to read some crime fiction not set in a large US city.
Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear –
I’ve read several of these in the past few months and while it’s nice to be caught up, I’m going to miss having a Maisie story to turn to any time soon.
Cedar Cove by Debbie Macomber –
This has been one of my reliable relaxing like sitting down for coffee with friends series. I usually read them in the summer and hope this year’s book is available around vacation time.
What about you? What series are you eagerly watching the new release calendars for? What is your most anticipated next to be published series book?

No stars – I couldn’t even finish it
1 star – I didn’t like it but I managed to finish it.
2 stars – It was OK. Not good, but seriously just OK.
3 stars - I liked it. I didn’t think it was great, but I thought it was good entertainment.
4 stars – I really liked it. I really think you might like it too.
5 stars – It was amazing. I’d recommend this to just about anyone.

I seldom read series books, anymore (apart from YA -- which just shows what a lightweight I am) but I used to read a lot of mysteries and I know that, "Ugh, I'm caught up and now I have to wait!" feeling. Of the books I've recently read, I'm most looking forward to the next book in the Wither series. Wither is a dystopian young adult read and I thought it was more realistic and intelligently written than most. I still haven't read Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series. I really need to give that a try.
I've been getting caught up on some series recently as well.
I am up to date on Camilleri's Montalbano mysteries. There are another one or two to be translated, and they'll be released later this year.
I've also read all Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books.
Kwei Quartey has another Gabon mystery coming out in late summer. I'm really looking forward to that one.
I'm within sight of the No 1 Ladies Detective agency, maybe 4 or 5 more books, and they read so quickly. I'm getting caught up this year!
Of course, I've started a couple of new series already this year - Harry Hole and Martin Beck.
Great reminder every now and then to see your series battle.
Ugh, do I really want to talk about my series reading? I want to read practically every mystery series I see. I'm like a kid in candy shop or donut shop or something. But, I have all these other books I want to read too.
One thing I've decided is to participate in the Waiting on Wednesday meme and use that to mostly highlight new books coming out in series that I am currently reading. Doesn't necessarily mean that I am caught up enough to read the upcoming book, but I have good intentions. After all, I should get more people to "drink the kool-aid" of series reading right? LOL
I am caught up with Maisie, too. It's too bad there is such a long wait for another one!!
Bookfool: LOL some of the YA series are fun. I've heard good things about the Wither series.
Raidergirl: Oooh - I have the Jackson Brodie books on my TBR list but haven't started that series yet. I'm waiting for the latest #1 Ladies Detective Agency audio from the library - I love listening to that series. Those other series you mentioned are new to me - will have to take a look.
Kay: of course you want to talk about your seires reading. After all - don't we all need more series on our TBR list? ;-)
Kailana: I know - I'm going to be Maisie-less for a long time now.
