Saga: Vol 1 by Brian K Vaughan

Saga Volume One by Brian K. Vaughan with art by Fiona Staples

Genre: Science Fiction (Graphic Novel)
Series: #1 in the Saga series
Publisher: Image Comics
Publication Date: 2012
Pages: 160
Source: Library

The Short Version:
A young couple in love attempt to keep their baby daughter safe in the midst of a galactic war that has their families on opposite sides.

Why I Read It:
I first heard about this series from Kailana at The Written World and after reading a bit about it I added my name to the waiting list at the library.

The Book:
This volume 1 is a compilation of issues 1-6 of the comic series.
From the Publisher:

SAGA is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in a sexy, subversive drama for adults. This specially priced volume collects the first arc of the smash hit series The Onion A.V. Club calls "the emotional epic Hollywood wishes it could make.

My Thoughts:
This is most definitely a comic for adults with adult language, sexual content and violence. Nevertheless iit’s an incredibly well done story and fabulous artwork that together create a world that draws you in and has you eager for more. The only thing I don’t like is that I now have to wait for the second volume to be published. I will be stalking the library website so that I can get on the waiting list early.

Marko and Alana are from opposite sides of a long running war. When their daughter is born this is the conversation:

Marko: She’s perfect.
Alana: Look, she’s gonna have your horns.
Marko: and your wings

Yeah this isn’t your average love story.

I knew going in that this was a science fiction story and I was prepared for different types of species. One group of characters has what looks like computer monitors for heads and there are also semi ghostlike children but in the context of the story you don’t even think twice about it because it works. Marko and Alana just want to stay out of the war and raise their daughter but they’re on the run from both sides of the conflict as well as some very interesting bounty hunters.

What I was not prepared for was the humor. I loved the way that Marko and Alana’s daughter interjects her own narrative and asides all along the way. Yes she’s an infant in this opening story arc of the series but she’s telling this in hindsight and I simply adore her dry wit.

The artwork is wonderful. Far better than some of the other graphic novels I’ve read. I already knew I liked Brian K. Vaughan’s storytelling (from the Y: The Last Man series) but I now want to seek out other work by Fiona Staples because of her talent as an artist.

It’s a bit of Romeo and Juliet mixed with Star Wars and pieces of every fantasy or science fiction story I’ve read or seen. The bottom line is that it’s fantastic. You should read it. I’m going to read it again before I take it back to the library and I’m going to pout until the next volume is waiting for me on the hold shelf at the library.

Loved it, too! Read it last week. Brian K. Vaughan is also one of the people behind Y: The Last Man, one of my all time favorite graphic novels.

Saga—great story, great art, lots of fun! I also anxiously await the next volume!
